About The Underground Cafe
A great little cafe to grab breakfast, lunch or sip coffee and tea with friends. Serving an eclectic menu one would expect from closer to the city, the cafe delivers a great experience without the long drive. The building was once a key stop on the underground railroad owned by Rev. John Mahan, a man of conviction who was martyred helping slaves escape the south.
Featured Question
Q: Where can I learn more about the history of The Underground Cafe?
A: The cafe was originally named the "Temperance Taven" and a key link in the underground railroad operated by Rev. John Mahan. We have a brochure for you to read while you enjoy the cafe and we highly recommend Ann Hagedorn's Beyond the River which describes Mahan's contributions to abolition. If you are lucky, catch Jim Schroeder when he is in the cafe and he can tell you some stories that are not in the book about the house, history and events in Sardinia.
