Featured Question

Q: Is it ok to work here on my laptop for an hour or so?

A: Hi Anna! You are very considerate for asking! Yes, it is ok - and you bring up a pertinent subject. Coffee shop owners are consistently trying to figure out how to balance providing a positive workspace for people, with being able to pay Seattle's steep commercial leases and high costs of operation. Generally, a well run shop spends 1/3 of income on labor, 1/3 on goods (like coffee, milk, etc), and the last 1/3 needs to pay for all other costs of doing business (rent, insurance, furniture, equipment, utilities, maintenance, credit card fees, internet service, etc.). So, when a customer buys an americano and hangs out for 3 hours, that's really not all that helpful to the business. On the other hand, if a person buys something every hour that they hang out, that really helps support the shop. So ultimately, it is up to the customer to feel out how much they get vs. what they give to keeping their local coffee shops healthy.
